Xubuntu menu bar disappeared

I am running Xubuntu on a laptop and after I downloaded the latest batch of "upgrades" the menu bar disappeared! I found the answer searching google:
Alt+F2 then enter xfce4-panel
That brings it back. Stayed there after a restart also.

I would now like to know how to have it auto-login to my wireless network after a restart.
